Hi,

I have an M1 mac mini, 2020. 16 GB, 1Tb, MacOS Monterey, 12.5.1.
Opening 35 RAW 30 MB Canon RAW files in Affinity Photo makes it beach ball and takes up all 16 GB.
Then I changed the default app to Affinity Photo 2. Did not make a difference.
Then I thought, let's open the same RAW files in Preview.
This opened faster.
I edited one file in Preview, did not save it.
Now trying to open the files again and I get this, with a bouncing Affinity 2 icon
Screenshot 2023-06-24 at 18.49.34.png

Then I tried previewing differen files in Finder using the spacebar. Just ONE FILE at the time and even screenshots, not being RAW files, show this problem : It shows glitches in the animation, this is literally what I get before the picture shows:

Also, Quicktime player crashes when opening screen recordings, however that works better with a different user profile.
All these things work better on my i3 iMac from 2010! Except that Affinity Photo 2 will not run on it.
Is it worth upgrading to 12.6.7? It says it will take half an hour (?).

Hmm....this does not sound like "normal" behavior for a Mac mini with your specifications.

I would do the following:

1. Make sure that you have your critical data backed up.

2. Install the newest macOS Monterey version. I believe that it is 12.6.7 (at this moment in time).

3 Open the "About this Mac" option at the top menu bar. Make sure that your Mac recognizes all of your RAM, etc.

4. Test out your various apps with this new macOS installation, with the "Activity Monitor" app. opened. This was you can get some idea of CPU usage, memory usage, etc.

5. Report your findings, back here on MacRumors, if you need additional advice, comments, etc.

Good luck!

From where did you install Affinity? Looks like you made that the default program for opening .cr2 files, which means that when you clicked on .cr2 file it tried to open it in Affinity. The message normally means that the app didn't open as they haven't registered the application with Apple which may or may not be a problem. I downloaded a trial Infinity Photo 2.1.1 and it installed and opened a ~50 MB CR2 file with no problem. I would uninstall Affinity and reinstall to get a version that verifies.

As to the other issues I suggest taking one issue at a time. Let's get Affinity working.

I think I downloaded it from the Serif (the makers) site. It does work, but after setting the defualt to Affinity Photo 2 (I used version 1 before) I get the message that finder created this file (see screenshot) with a creation date and time equal to opening, not editing or saving, the file in Preview.

Fishrrman stupid questions:

Do you really need 30 files open at once?
Could you do with, say, only 5-10 open?

Really need them open. Should be no problem... 35 x 30 MB = 1050 MB, let's say 2100 MB including swap file...

We need to focus on just one thing.

1. Uninstall Affinity Photo

2. Reinstall it

3. Don't understand your finder problem. Don't see a screen shot that has creation date in it. You are creating a new file, opening an existing file, ? Give the exact steps you took so it can be duplicated. Don't understand where Preview fits in the picture.
