Went to BestBuy today and had a sales person tell me not to buy a mini but get an imac........he said the speed was too slow compaired to the imac. Also that by the time I paid for mouse, monitor, keyboard I would have the same about of money invested. Just wanted some opinions?
Thanks

Speed is relative, however, overall the iMac will have better performance specs than the Mini. It's a combination of processor, memory, gpu and hard drive speed.

However, my Mini is presently connected to a 55" Panasonic plasma's HDMI port in the family room, possible with an iMac, but cumbersome at best.

Well it depends.
If you already have a keyboard/mouse and a screen you are probably cheaper with the MacMini.
If I hadn't a 26'' LCD HD t.v I would probably go for the iMac.

But it's personal. So don't focus on other comments but determine for yourself what is the best in your environment.

The issue with the iMac vs the mac Mini is that iMac has a more powerful process (Core i5 vs Core 2 Duo), also the imac supports more RAM and has a much more powerful GPU. If you want better raw specs the go iMac. If your computing load is light then you can easily get away with a mini and save some money.

I have a mini server which works great, but it just can't compete on raw GPU horsepower. The sever does fine for chewing through Mathematica computations or playing Unreal Tournament 2004.

Cheers

yes the iMac has a faster processor and abetter GPU , but the mini is meant as a very basic computer for people who have a keyboard , a mouse and a monitor or TV at home already i was told and is 60% cheaper

and if you use the mini for what is was meant for , browsing the web , emailing , watching a movie , and some other light tasks then you will not notice a difference really
the mini was never meant to replace a iMac or Mac pro
even if some
believe it could and abuse that little thing for tasks a MacPro would struggle, but blame the poor mini for being underpowered then is not fair
