My Mac Mini is set to restart about 15 minutes before I come home from work.

When I got home today, the screen was stuck on the pre-boot black screen and logo.
I somehow got it to start up and then noticed the mouse movement froze about every two seconds for maybe a second or two. Continuously.
I grabbed a window and moved both around and could see it freeze regularly.
I then did a speed test on Safari just to see if the graphic display was freezing as well. The movement of the graphics was continuous for the entire time the test ran even while my mouse kept freezing. Video on iTunes runs smoothly.
I tried resetting SMC with no effect. PRAM was not even possible, I could not get the Mac to restart properly to make that work at all. It just gets stuck back on the logo.
I use a TB3 to DisplayPort cable to my NEC monitor and then tried a HDMI cable. No difference. (I often get an out of range message but that is not the issue right now).

So after a few tries at restarting, clearing cache, restarting, unplugging all the ports, etc, the start stop mouse freeze does not go away. I am unable to restart with the option key to try Safe Mode or start from another disk.
Now my Mac Mini gets stuck on the pre-boot logo on black background for a long period of time (minutes) before finally booting. When it does, the stop and go mouse freezing continues.

I've never experienced anything like this in 30 years. I can usually figure things out but not this.

Any ideas??

Progress!

After unplugging and then plugging things back in, I've discovered that the problem is USB related.
Specifically, something connected to my Anker 10-port USB 3.0 hub.
Next step, unplug everything from the hub and slowly re-introduce things.

Question-Would one particular item cause this, or is it a combination of too many things plugged in all at once? Guess I'll find out.
Weird that it happened all of a sudden. Nothing new in the hub in the last few days, this just happened out of the blue over night.

I would DISABLE automatic startup.

Instead, wait until you get home and are sitting in front of it before you press the power-on button.

This way you can watch what happens during the boot process.
