mac mini - storage - 'other' - whats average?

hi, I'm busy sorting out my hard drive, freeing up space.
this is because my music files have gone crazy and I'm finding multiple copies of the same songs...so my iTunes library would say 16GB (which is right) but when going to 'about mac' 'more info' 'storage' - my audio was showing 60GB - I've now sifted through and got it down to 18GB - yay..
Then, movies 18GB, photos 3GB, Apps 8GB..they seem fine also
But..'other' (yellow) is nearly 60GB (57.9) ..so what exactly is that? can anyone guide me through this dark time and help me find the light? ..or is that normal?

Use something like Grand Perspective. It gives a graphical view of your HDD. The bigger the square, the bigger the file.
