Hi,

Made the switch just a couple of weeks ago and am generally happy with my shiny iMac. However, one thing is really peeving me...

If I leave the thing for any length of time, or put it to sleep for a while, when I return, the programs I left open have closed themselves. These include Word, Entourage and Firefox.

How can I stop this from happening?

Thanks for any help.

C.

That's not possible unless it's turning right off, which it won't unless you tell it to.

When it sleeps, presumably, the OS will write to PRAM which apps are open, preferences etc. So there is no way that could happen.

Trust me

It is doing this.

If I walk away and return 10 minutes later, Firefox will be gone, and when I relaunch it, it has to reload all open tabs. Same with Entourage. Or Word docs.

Ok, I can't help you here then. I'd be curious to see what others say as it doesn't make sense or even possible to me.

Logs

Thanks for th assistance here guys - I posted this on MacForums a few days ago and didn't get a single response!

However, no luck looking at the crash logs.

There are no pop-ups or anything to indicate the programs closing - they just vanish!

Except....

Word does prompt me saying it is going to close and do I want to save etc.

Sounds like, of all things, you have your "Log out after X minutes of inactivity" threshold set too low. This is easily corrected. Open up System Preferences, then click Security. In there will be the option you want. Either change the value to something larger, or disable it entirely.

A ha!

Yes - this was set to 15 minutes. I have now disabled it and will report back in 15 mins!!!

Well, I've learnt something today! Thanks wrldwzrd89.

cccustard, sorry if I came across as a bit unhelpful and presumptious, but I honestly didn't know about that setting.

Yep

That did it.

Thanks again everyone - this is now my Mac forum of choice!
