My first guess would be that the .iso file format does not work for audio CDs, as they have no file-system as suchthe data is written onto the disc in tracks and sectors, rather than in individual files like .mp3, .wav, or .flac would be. This is the actual reason CD ripping applications are needed.
That said, some operating systems wrap around audio CDs and allow them to be browsed in the file manager (Windows definitely does this, I'm not sure about OS X).
So, basically, you can't create an ISO image (with files etc. of an AUDIO CD, like you would be able to with a data CD or any type of DVD.
