Mac:Office 2008 - 'Powerpoint cannot open this file as it is an older format'

I have this error when trying to open a certain powerpoint file.
Is there anyway around this? I thought this mac: office 2008 was supposed to be fully compatible with everything?

Anyone? I can't find anything on google other than being able to open files created in a newer format on an older version of office, which is the opposite to my problem.

What kind of file is it? Powerpoint 2003? v.x? other? from a PC?

You could always try Keynote

it's .ppt from a PC, I think it's either 2003 or 2007.

IF the file is from a much older version of Office it may not open. Of, if the file was saved in some odd format. I've seem both happen.
