Mac OS 10.5.7- External speakers don't show up

Anyone else had this problem? A few days after updating to the new OS, my speakers just disappeared from sound in my system prefs. Tried unplugging the speakers and restarting to no avail. If anyone has any success solving this prob, pls lmk. Thx
