I got a pen drive that came with a MacBook Air with OS 10.6, now I got 10.8.2 so it is useless. I am trying to format to give it a better use but it does not appear on the list of drives, it is protected.
Does anyone know if it can be formatted, elimination the protection?
Thanks

Enable debug Menu in Disk Utility, link below, you then can choose to see all disks in Disk Utility, click on disk and format.

Enable Disk Utility's Debug Menu

Essential it says this:

Quit Disk Utility if it is open.

Launch Terminal, located at /Applications/Utilities.

Enter the following command at the Terminal prompt:
defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1

Press enter or return.

Close Terminal.

It's there but it does not accept formatting

and I can not find any physical lock on it, It dos even accept a name change.

The drive is protected and as far as I know there's no way to erase it within OS X. Bear in mind that the drive contains iLife so you may still want to keep it as a backup. You should also include it with the computer when you eventually sell it.

Just listen to Nermal's advice, I agree with him, not only that, how much is a 8GB stick nowadays, cheap.

It's probably done the same way as those crappy U3 sticks years ago, need some kind of special software to format.
