Mac OS X 10.5.5 Won't Update

I have a macbook that locks up when ever I try to update the software. the status bar doesn't move even after an all night try. Do I need to get get disks to upgrade? Thank you in advance for some insight.

what are you trying to update to? are you just connecting to the server or using disks?

I don't have the disks, however, last night I started and was finally able to download the last 3 updates and everything is updated. Thank You for the help.
