Following last week's seed of the first developer build of Mac OS X 10.6.8, Apple has now pushed out a second version known as Build 10K524.

With the update checking in as a 1 GB download, developers are reportedly being asked to focus their testing on AirPort, Graphics Drivers, Mac App Store, Networking, QuickTime and VPN, the same areas highlighted in the initial developer build last week.

As we have previously noted, Apple is expected to make Mac OS X Lion a major focus of its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) scheduled for just a few weeks from now. Apple has pegged the public launch of the next-generation operating system for "summer", although a more specific timeframe is not yet known. Consequently, Mac OS X 10.6.8 may be the final update for Snow Leopard before Lion debuts.

Can't come soon enough ... will be nice to be back to a hardware-independent build instead of all the one-offs of 10.6.7 generated for the new Thunderbolt machines.

Can anybody please elaborate on the “focus.. testing”, particularly for graphics drivers? I'm pretty sure “graphics” has been an area of focus in the developer builds for years (okay, maybe not that long), but nothing has really changed.

Graphics drivers are constantly being updated, and therefore constantly need to be tested. :) It's a good thing!

SL 10.6.7 works great for me as is. I hope this update, when released, doesn't mess anything up.
Please make it a good one, Apple. I don't see myself moving to Lion for a long time.

I agree SL is a outstanding OS but your not curious about what Lion has in store? I feel Like Apple has made such spectacular improvements in their OS's throughout the last few years that I'm pumped to see whats waiting for us with Lion. Plus if it sucks you can watch me sprint back to SL lol

Not to be off topic, but Lion is really nice, very polished. It still has a lot of bugs, but we'll see what happens with it this june :)

I'm still relatively new to macs, so I'd like to know....when lion does come out, how would one go about updating to it? Is it like pay $xxx for a download or something?

All previous major upgrade to Mac OS X have been sold on discs in retail stores. In the past you simply purchased the disc, insert it into your machine and let it install. Lion will probably be sold in retail stores on disc and also possibly for first time be available as a download upgrade in the Mac App Store.

Why is it the delta and combo are both 1GB?

Also, Apple needs to start telling people to focus on Boot Camp. I've had kernel panics and various other annoying errors with it in the past that I'm sure can be corrected with a bit of effort (and by past i mean relatively recent past).

Boot Camp is a set of Windows drivers, so it does not affect Mac OS X. New Boot Camp compatible partitions on your harddisk(s) do not cause kernel panics.

Regarding the 1 GB: It is a DEVELOPMENT version, not a LITTLE TOY.

I recall reading that Lion will terminate frozen apps on its own and that users can now resize windows from any corner. The login screen is now pure white as well. I hope that can be changed, as pure white is boring and annoying, and wallpapers are cool.

I know there's more to it, and if it has h.264 H/W acceleration for ATi video cards then I'll splurge in an instant.

The graphics 'focus...testing' would be fixing up small bugs here and there with the big changes coming in Lion - if you notice in Lion there is a big version jump in all the graphics drivers. Since Snow Leopard is the last release for 32bit processors I'd say Apple want to wrap things up nicely so that the platform is stable enough so that people can gradually migrate to 64bit processors and thus to Lion.

A lot of these bugs that are fixed are very niche/rare that most people will never come across but they still need fixing - the interesting part will be how well the 2011 computers will fly with Lion given the move to OpenGL 3.2 :D

I meant the Boot Camp partitioning app on the mac side. It can cause kernel panics. Why on earth anyone would think the windows side could affect the mac side is beyond me, however. You should have known better than to assume I meant that. You also don't understand the difference between a delta and a combo update. The sizes shouldn't be equal. That was my question. Plus, why would I have thought it was some sort of toy?... I think you need to evaluate your evaluations closer.

Bizarrely I've had nothing but trouble since upgrading to SL (screen issues, everything is far slower, crashes etc). I wish I'd done a TM backup to return to Leopard! I hope 10.6.8 is more stable, otherwise a complete re-install is on the cards!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8J2)

No more beach balls on quad core macs with 8th ram please....

I don't get why you would install a developer preview on your main system/partition. Betas are known to have bugs. That's why they are usually not available to the public. Just use them for what they are meant: testing.

Snow Leopard is still in beta?

Graphic bug that I reported

I do not have access to beta build so perhaps someone will test this and please report. This bug was ack by apple developers.

The problem is if you enable spaces (I have 4x3) and start Mail.app to (1,2) space with stretch from edge to edge to the screen (covering full screen)
and try switching back and forth between other spaces you should see (in 10.6.7) weird screen corruption over some time that is getting really bad over time. Mostly on the edges of the screen. This effect all application but mail is the one that is recreated the fastes. I was not able to reproduce on anything else than MBP 13" 2011 Sandy Bridge with Intel HD 3000.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. I'm using 10.6.7, not 10.6.8 beta yet. I was going slightly off-topic. SL generally has been far less stable and slower than on Leopard, hence the likely need for complete re-install - to 10.6.7 :)
