Apple today seeded Mac developers with a new version of Mac OS X 10.6.8, termed Build 10K537. The new build, which continues to weigh in at about 1 GB as a combo update and is approaching 500 MB as a delta update, is the first to be pushed out to developers in over three weeks as Apple's team has undoubtedly been focused on WWDC.

Apple's documentation requests that developers focus their testing on the same six areas as in previous builds: AirPort, Graphics Drivers, Mac App Store, Networking, QuickTime and VPN.

With OS X Lion set for a public launch sometime next month, Mac OS X 10.6.8 could be the final maintenance update to Snow Leopard.

Where previous updates deltas? Or this is totally new to Apple?

So I suppose that from Lion on, they will be implement delta updates for both Mac OS X and iOS.

Actually, my guess is that 10.6.8 will be required / lay the groundwork for Lion installation. Makes sense that it would be the last maintenance release for Snow Leopard.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see another update after Lion ships, it has happened at least once before so I'd put the odds around 50/50.

Yep, previous updates have been available in both delta form (standard from Software Update) and Combo Update, it's been that way for years.

please let this be a universal update. no more of those different updates for specific models.

True - they're killing of support for 32bit Intel processors so I wouldn't be surprised if they supported it for longer, they have done it in the past when they've killed off some hardware in transition to the next OS and thus have supported the old version for a while - Leopard is still supported for example, there is still software made available for 10.4.

I'd say that combo updates will continue since they're useful for those of us who make large deployments and wish to have a fresh image that is up to date :D With that being said though, since it will be provided through the 'AppStore' Apple might end up updating their Lion.app download as well which could mean if Apple releases 10.7.1 update then Lion.app will have those changes slip streamed into it which means the end user will always have the latest version of Lion when they re-download it.

IIRC the Lion download will have the same rules apply to it so that you will be able to re-download it in the future if need be.

No indication that there is a split - the current update works with old and new computers.

Less? With the whole timeline for free upgrades, isn't it usually only a few weeks with OS X releases? There has been talk of 30 days, which would put it to first week of July, pretty exciting, and an SL update in the meantime? Pinch me :D.

I wonder if they will finally fix the iTunes Dashboard widget in 10.6.8 before removing it altogether in Lion. "Crashing reliably since 2005". Come on ... it's probably my last chance to ask ... and that would make, what, 30 times I've asked in 6 years? I knew they'd get bored of it before I did :)!

If it's going to be only three weeks till this is released then how will the software reconvene with the original substrate of say, Leopard or Snow Leopard?

Say again? 10.6.8 has been released already.
