Hello, I'm helping a friend with her Macbook Pro running Max OSX snow leopard 10.6.8. We are working through the phone, and if that wasn't hard enough, I run Linux and have very little experience with macs. She is currently using the dorm Internet connection through an ethernet cable.

Problem: She was starting Netflix in Google Chrome when it told her that her Microsoft Silverlight installation was corrupt and that she had to reinstall it(She has been successfully using Netflix without trouble for 2 months). She tried doing this, but when she had uninstalled silverlight, she started having trouble with the internet. This led to her thinking that she needed to update her software. She was told that a connection to the network could not be made, so she can't update. So then she tried installing chrome and firefox again, to see if that was the problem. However, whenever she is downloading things, her connection gets reset with error messages such as "connection reset by peer" and "an ssl error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made". Now she can't download anything without it being a corrupted file from missing segments and, oddly, she has a new folder on her computer full of Facebook files (pictures of friends) which she never downloaded. The only web browser installed is Safari.

Attempts to resolve:
Restarting computer.
Reconnecting ethernet cable.
Numerous google searches on the topic.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do? Thank you very much in advance.

--- *EDIT ---
She is now having trouble doing simple tasks. When attempting to move her files to an external hard drive, the files are being deselected as soon as they are selected and then won't move.
