Er does this in anyway relate to the acquiring or use of an illegal copy of OS X?

No, not at all . I don't want to use it for illegal purposes. I am developing an application and my application needs thorough understanding of dmg format.

Unfortunately it is not something I know . I'll have a hunt around in a bit because it is something I could find useful in the future but I can't promise anything.
