Just ordered an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual with two 120 Gb SSD's from here:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/MEQMH0GBK/

I asked that it be configured to RAID 0 (Striped). I know that I shall have to format to Mac OS X Extended Journaled with GUID.

My question is: will formatting the disks destroy the RAID set up or will the Raid 0 configuration survive the format?

How difficult is it to set up a RAID 0 in Disk Utility? I checked that the option to do so is there and the SSDs are matched so it shouldn't be a problem, right?

Does it take a long time to configure twin SSDs to RAID 0?

I'll be using Firewire 800 to connect the external to my Late 2009 iMac.

I've never done this before, I imagine that it's fairly straight forward but I thought I'd check here first and seek the opinions of more advanced users.

The RAID is handled by the controller, when you format you are formatting the volume that the controller is making visible to your machine.

So yes, the RAID config will survive.

Actually, I have three of these. They come preformatted to run OS X as needed. If you were running Windows you would need to reformate them. Otherwise, you are good to go as is.
