Mac OS X External Hard drive not showing up anywhere!

Hi, I was given this laptop by my brother who has made this powerbook g4 shell into a newer mac.

My problem is that every time I plug in an external hard drive into my USB port, it doesn't show up anywhere!

I have looked in the Disk Utility like people keep have said on other threads but it doesn't show up ANYWHERE!

I have tried it with two ext. hdd but no luck what so ever =[
Someone PLEASE help! I just want to get the films off of it and onto my laptop!!

May be this is happening due to problem in USB cable. You can give a try by connecting that external drive with some other Mac if it is working fine their then just change your USB cable and enjoy your movies but if problem remain same with other Mac, then do not do much R & D because chances of physical damage is very high, just send it immediately to a professional or contact to the provider of that hard drive.
