Apple's Movie Editing Software Heads to Stores

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL.O), the maker of Macintosh personal computers, said on Thursday that a new version of movie-editing software it hopes will broaden the market for its digital film and DVD editing products will go on sale next Saturday.
Apple, based in Cupertino, California, had unveiled the software in April during the National Association of Broadcasters meeting in Las Vegas. Final Cut Pro 4 will sell for about $999 and it will be available June 14.

Apple, like many personal computer companies such as No. 1 PC makers Dell Computer Corp. (DELL.O) and Gateway Inc. (GTW.N) have been looking for ways to increase its revenue after a 3-year downturn in demand for PCs.

"We've had Final Cut Pro for the last 3 or 4 years now, but we're always looking to make the bubble bigger and make the revenue streams larger," said Paul Saccone, product marketing manager for the product.

Apple said the product is aimed at 3 sets of customers: editors, post-production or broadcast customers, and its own software developer community.

The latest version has more than 300 new features which are targeted at the high-end video editing space, Apple said. (Additional reporting by Caroline Humer in New York)

Mac OS X Security Update and Final Cut Pro 4 Ship Date

eWeek expects that Apple will introduce a Mac OS X Server Update today:

The update will upgrade Apache to Version 2.0.46, patching a security hole in mod_dav, an Apache module that provides DAV functionality. When set off remotely, this security bug can cause Apache to crash, according to documentation.

Apple did announce today that Final Cut Pro 4 would be shipping on June 14th.

Final Cut Pro® 4, the next generation of Apple's Emmy award-winning editing software for film, HD, SD and DV, will go on sale at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at participating Apple® Authorized Resellers and Apple retail stores. Selected stores will host a "4@4" kick-off event with theater demos and industry-leading editors sharing how their latest projects were made with Final Cut Pro.

Final Cut Pro 4 was announced at the National Broadcasters Association in April.

What a lucky Birthday it would be. . .

Final Cut Pro sure would make me a good birthday present. . .

Anyone paying attention? You don't turn 22 everyday you know!

i guess this answers once and for all anyone's questions about whether or not they were holding on fc4 until we had some new macs (and a new os)...

Can anyone find the FCP4 Upgrade Path? I have FCE and FCP 1.0 I think - I'm curious if I qualify for an upgrade.

You can also upgrade from FCE to FCP 4.0 for $699.00. It's listed under "Apple Software" on their online store.

Well, seems like Apple lag time between announcing and shipping is getting better at least.. :p

Eh, this isn't like normal Apple lag time. Everyone shows off their best toys at NAB. AFAIK some of the stuff Avid announced at NAB would be availible until the end of the year.

I guess I'll get my hands on FCP 4 around August or so. 2 months should be enough time for the early adaptors to find all the bugs. ;)

go apple

My guess is that if its being released in June it will not be 64 bit. The main advantage to 64 bit with FCP would be memory usage, and without the hardware, the software does not need it. But I am sure Apple has an update to produce a 64 bit clean version and squash bugs planned for sometime soon after the 970 is released. Video users will love the ram available to them.

Just buy 16GiB of RAM to use it!

Why would FCP need more than 2GiB of RAM? (Serious question....)

It would seem to me that no non-trivial video project would fit completely in RAM - therefore FCP would need to work with files on disk. If that's the case, what would be the advantage of rewriting for 64-bit?

Yeah. FCP 3.0 wasn't exactly the best. 3.0.4 is pretty solid tho (still get the occasional unexpected quit, but its pretty stable overall)

We've decided to not upgrade our main machine to 4 until at least there is one or two point upgrades.

However, the post house a friend works at is going to FCP4 as soon as it ships. So I'm looking forward to hearing all his whining. :)

[It does sound like a really sexcellent upgrade tho]
