SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL.O), the maker of Macintosh personal computers, said on Thursday that a new version of movie-editing software it hopes will broaden the market for its digital film and DVD editing products will go on sale next Saturday.
Apple, based in Cupertino, California, had unveiled the software in April during the National Association of Broadcasters meeting in Las Vegas. Final Cut Pro 4 will sell for about $999 and it will be available June 14.
Apple, like many personal computer companies such as No. 1 PC makers Dell Computer Corp. (DELL.O) and Gateway Inc. (GTW.N) have been looking for ways to increase its revenue after a 3-year downturn in demand for PCs.
"We've had Final Cut Pro for the last 3 or 4 years now, but we're always looking to make the bubble bigger and make the revenue streams larger," said Paul Saccone, product marketing manager for the product.
Apple said the product is aimed at 3 sets of customers: editors, post-production or broadcast customers, and its own software developer community.
The latest version has more than 300 new features which are targeted at the high-end video editing space, Apple said. (Additional reporting by Caroline Humer in New York)
