I have a 2009 MacBook. It is 2ghz and I have 4gb of RAM. My hard drive is still fine. Everytime I click on things I get the spinning pinwheel. some applications have started to refuse to laugh safari and iPhoto won't even come up anymore. All they say is not responding. I already ran onyx. Any idea on anything else I could do to get my computer usable again.

While my 2009 MB doesn't freeze up as badly as yours, I often get the beachball spinning pinwheel when I'm opening or closing programs or web pages in Safari. :(

I was able to fix a friend's MBP having similar issues by using DiskWarrior to rebuild its directory. Tech Tools Pro will do the same. If you have access to these utilities, would be worth a try...
