... but only if you type this into the terminal

Code:
defaults write com.apple.dock mineffect suck

Make sure to log out and in again to enable the new minimise effect!

(No idea why Apple doesn't enable this by default, its rather cool)

Remember to type
Code:
killall Dock
after to restart the Dock!

It works better when the dock is on the side of the screen, IMO.

the easy way...

Can someone clarify for us non-Unix knowledge nerds?

Yes.
Open Terminal (Spotlight it or its in Applications:Utilities) and paste
Code:
defaults write com.apple.dock mineffect suck
into it (press enter). Then type
Code:
killall Dock
and press enter. Your Dock should dissapear briefly and return in a few seconds. Now, when you minizie you should see a different effect!
To "uninstall" goto System Prefs and select your 'old' minimize effect from the Dock tab. Back in Terminal, type
Code:
killall Dock
again and press enter.
