Mac OS X won't boot

when i turn on my macbook, a folder with a questionmark appears on the screen...

what does this mean? has anyone had the same problem?

a friend of mine mentioned something about the computer not being able to find the hard disk.

Or at least it can't find the startup folder, or the boot sector of the disk. First thing to try is booting from your system disk, then repairing your hard drive with Disk First Aid

Press and hold 'c' while booting to boot from the CD/DVD... good luck!
