Which cat names will Apple choose for future Mac OS releases? Here's my speculative guess. :)

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
  • Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
  • Mac OS X 10.7 Lynx
  • Mac OS X 10.8 Cougar
  • Mac OS XI 11 Lion

OS XI is probably not going to be named after cats. for every new "whole number upgrade", the go to a different naming scheme, but were not necessarily called their code names, like we do today.

10.7 Cougar
10.8lynx
10.9: lion

There won't be a Mac OS XI. OS X 10.9 Lion will be the last release and after that Apple will stop selling Macs and concentrate only on iTunes, iPods and iPhones and other consumer gadgets.

With some luck, they will at least Open Source the desktop version of OS X at that time. (No, not Darwin. The full OS -with- the GUI.)

But maybe, MAYBE, Steve Jobs will retire before that happens and a manager with a less proprietary attitude will take over and open OS X to other hardware platforms.

Or maybe none of this will happen. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter.

Oh... And it's too sad that the English language does not have a nice word for "Königstiger" -- "royal bengal tiger" doesn't really cut it.

Sure. Keep thinking that.

OS XI will not follow the cat naming convention, since it's a different OS.

OS XI will be a fully multitouch, mouseless interface system that is as different from the GUI of today as the GUI of today was from the command line interface of the Apple II.

and the GUI will be completely redesigned in a hyper-realistic, 3D interface.:D

What if they do like they did with QuickTime X? Jumping from version 7 to 10. lol.

Maybe it will be
Mac OS X.6 Snow Leopard
Mac OS X.7 Ocelot
Mac OS XI Marble? Sounds like a good name to me. But keeping with cat names: Mac OS XI Lynx

Interesting but I don't follow the stopping at 10.9?--I would think that unless they totally dump OS-X it would just follow 10.10, 10.11 etc. Sorry, my knowledge of cat names is rather limited. ;)

It would draw even more attention if they jumped to a MAJOR new release of the OS for the whole Apple franchise, not just the Mac OS.

They could switch to the mythology names like they are doing with the internal names for the 10.5 updates.

Duff-Man says....this topic has been so many times already and the same silly replies always come up...nothing new to see here....oh yeah!

Duff-Man says...now there's an idea with potential:

OS 11.0 Weizenbier
OS 11.1 Doppelbock
OS 11.2 Porter
OS 11.3 Stout
and so on...

works for me.....oh yeah!

OS 11.4 Pilsner
OS 11.5 Indian Pale Ale
OS 11.6 Heffeweizen
OS 11.7 Belgian White
OS 11.8 Lager
OS 11.9 Bud << version that runs everywhere
