So I restarted my Mac and held the option key and four options came up. My Mac HD, my HD backup, my Recovery HD and a four one Mac HD 10.8.4. WHy would that four one be there. I'm running 10.8.5 currently but why would a 10.8.4 version be there? Would it allow me to start up with a previous update of my Mac OS?

It sounds like you are seeing something on maybe an external drive.
Enter the command "diskutil list" (without the quotes) in Terminal app and post up the output and I'll try and explain from that what all your partitions are.
