Hello everybody!

There have been a few threads on this topic before, but I believe it is time to update the list. "With what?", you may ask. Well, I'd like to ask that too!

See if you can find/point out games that meet the following:
  1. Must have both a Mac (NOT bootcamp) and PC version.
  2. Must be able to interconnect between the two systems.

For example, Warcraft III* meets all requirements, while Age of Empires doesn't (as you can only play among people with the same system). *[restrictions apply]

It would be excellent if, together with a title, posters could link/explain any particular procedure needed for mixed systems lan play. Also, please tag the games you propose with attributes you deem useful such as retail/free, old/new, low/high-end graphics, genre, etc.

I'm counting on all of you and the weath of your knowledge to compile this list, which I'll try to keep neat. May the posing commence.

Confirmed Working
Strategy:
  • Warcraft III (custom maps may disconnect)
  • Starcraft (PCs need patch 1.10 miniumum - latest patch is fine)
  • Red Alert 3

  • Call of Duty: Original, United Offensive, CoD 2, CoD4: modern Warfare

Untested
  • Battle for Wesnoth (FREE)
  • Dungeon Keeper II
  • Rise of Nations
  • Europa Universalis III (and other Paradox Games)
  • Descent: Freespace II

See now this is why I appreciate Blizzard. This, and no awful Cider ports.

For example, Warcraft III meets all requirements
Even so, there are some descrepancies which cause a cross-platform issue. Due to the way certain triggers are handled on both systems, some custom maps may cause players on different platforms to disconnect. One such map is the DotA AI version (bots). As there are a vast amount of custom maps available, it would be impossible to list all the good/bad ones. If intending to play custom maps cross-platform YMMV.

Starcraft need to be patched up on PCs to incorporate TCP/UDP connections. Pre 1.10 will not work.

With all Blizzard games, players must be running the same patch versions.

And, add to the list Quake III Arena.

Thanks and let's keep going!

Thank you everybody for the feedback!

It looks we got plenty of shooters so far. Less so other genres. Keep going people!

List updated in the first post.

PS: I didn't know Red Alert 3 had come out for Mac already. :)

Command & Conquer: Generals and Command & Conquer: Zero Hour are Mac to Mac only.

Starcraft originally used the IPX network protocol which is not supported in OS X. Patch 1.10 for OS X included UDP (TCP/IP) support so that OS X users could play LAN games. TCP/IP was added to the PC version a little after this also in a delayed update of patch 1.10. Any patch version earlier than 1.10 will not work over LAN. Anything greater will work fine (as long as the same version is used). The latest patch 1.16(.1) will work fine.

You can get the Broodwar patches here

Bump. Anyone know of any new cross-platform games?

Star Wars: TFU? (I know it's not out until next week).
