Mac Photos changing photo file names to REALLY long names

Lately when I import photos into MacOS Sierra's Photos app it will take some of the photo files names (ex. DSC0300) to a random (and long) series of letters and numbers for the file name. Is there a way to prevent this? I know I could just rename them afterwards but didn't want to do that unless i had to.
