For the first time in 13 years I finally decided to revive my cMP 2,1.
I generally use a cMP 5,1 Dual 3,46 as main workstation
But I still sometimes used the old 2,1 as a render node but then it started to shut down after some time while it was running. Probably the old boy heats up to much I thought and left it there.
Now finally I pulled myself together and for a start decided to put some new thermal paste on any heatsink/processor I could lay my hands on: the 2 cpus, maybe a northbridge or even a southbridge? Couldn’t really get any info about the latter on the net.
That got me to disassemble the old Mac Pro to the point where it should be just a simple “pull out the heatsink”.

I spend have of the afternoon searching on forums and google which unfortunately gave only some info for the 2008 cMP 3,1 and interestingly for the 1,1. But this time I just can’t find anything on that specific matter for my 2,1.

I am struggling with basically 2 major issues here.

First, the two cpu heatsinks won’t come off.
After unscrewing each of the 4 screws per heatsink they should just come out by pulling them away from the motherboard.
It seems though that the heatsinks are glued or soldered to the cpus. I applied quite some force to pull them out and don’t want to overdo because I am afraid to break something.

The other thing I cannot find any information on is if there is a north- or southbridge heatsink which I can apply fresh thermal paste to. And if so, how to do that.

If anyone has managed to disassemble the heatsinks (cpu, nothbridge etc.) from her or his cMp 2,1 to apply fresh thermal paste, help would be highly needed and appreciated.

Just a quick update. I managed to get the heatsinks off by brute force.
They seem to have been glued to the processors. At the moment they cracked off I had the terrible feeling of braking the cpus from the logic board. But everything went well.
I then scratched as much as possible of that stuff from heatsinks and processors, applied thermal paste and put everything back together.
