Hey guys.

I've got a lead on a brand new MP 2.8 8-core for $1649 out the door. I originally was going to go with the 2.26 8-core but my main use is with Pro Tools and video editing. After reading the stories of PT not running well on the new machines, I'm leaning towards the 2.8 now, especially at this price.

Is this a no brainer to jump on?

Yup. You can flip it for more than that if needs be.

I am seriously considering this now instead of the 2.26.

Might be worth it with the 4870 kit

If this were me, my main concern would be answering the question: "why is it so cheap?" If I could answer that and be satisfied with it, I'd jump on it.

I'm a firm believer in the "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is" philosophy, but that doesn't mean there aren't occasional great bargains out there.

I just jumped on a 2 x 2.8 for $1899 earlier this week. Why is the Apple store offering such a big markdown on the system in your store? Is this a business purchase like the $1899 deal?

How much is the business markdown in general? student is usually just $100.

Other then the CPU and RAM type... any other major differences, pci slots etc?

From what I have heard usual business discount is about 5% and then you can do tax exempt if your business qualifies.

No Brainer....

I picked up the same system with 8800GT+8GB RAM+23" ACD for $1900 last week. If it had just been the Mac Pro- 23" ACD, it still would have been a great deal.

DO IT!!!

I would not have walked out of the store without it at that price. I wish they could ship it to me. i would gladly pay for shipping.

If you absolutely have to use pro tools yes go for it.

But if you do everything else besides pro tools, then no get the Nehalems.

But the $1600 price tag is an amazing deal, how did you get it so cheap? I know business discounts are $1899.

they both have PCIe slots, however 09 has two 16x express slots for intensive graphics, whilst 08 only has one x16 express slot.
also optical drive is (by default) sata in 09, and IDE in 08, but can be done with sata in 08 too..

you really dont know much about professional audio work either?
so your statement would be "if you absolutely need to use any audio software, yes go for it"
nehalems have problems with Logic and Pro Tools. big problems. and cubase is so-so even on previous generations. and you of course do know that real PT systems depend on DSP and need more than anything a stable system because all the processing is done in dedicated cards?

Incorrect, the 08 has two PCIe 4x and two PCIe 2.0 16x slots, the only difference in the 09 is that all four slots are now PCIe 2.0, but still two 4x and two 16x slots.
