mac pro 2008/Logic built in audio card latency?

Hi all,
I am getting a Mac Pro '08 within a week. I have a good external AD/DA with optical SPDIF. Is it viable to use the built-in audiocard using an SPDIF link in terms of latency in Logic Pro? Or do I need to get another card (such as Duet)?
