I'm looking at purchasing a 2008, 3.2 8-core Mac Pro. Since I'm heavily interested in 3D modelling and gaming, I am planning to upgrade the graphics to either the 5770 or 5870.
Most posts i've found when searching suggest the cheapest method is 'flashing', which seems to cause problems with the boot-up screen (no problem), but also steam, which is a big issue for me.
So that leaves me with the option of purchasing the upgrade from the Apple site ($500), or off ebay.
However, i recently found this link:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/978894-pc-ati-57705870-cards-flashed-to-work-with-mac-pro/
Which suggests the PC versions of the graphics card will work without the 'flashing' process. This would be significantly cheaper, but I'm concerned about being able to run Steam, and having the same compatability as a MAC version of the card.
Any experience with the 3,1 (2008) Mac Pro installing either the 5770 or 5870 would be very much appreciated!
