Apologies of this is in the wrong section!

Hi all. I have access to 2 pallets of old Mac Pros. Today I got one (a1289) up on the bench to try it out and clean it up etc. I realised straight away that it needed a graphics card (no on board gfx apparently) so I had a look on line and found a list of compatible cards. I happened to have a few quadro 4000 on a shelf so I stuck one of them in. Notice the bad graphics in the background in the picture. Menus and text are all clear.

Anyway it takes about ten minutes to actually display anything. It boots straight to macos utilities. Now I couldn’t re-install Sierra as I didn’t have network access. Disk utility shows Mac OS is installed on a partition but I can’t boot to it!!

I tried holding ALT (no apple keyboard available) and I hear a chime but nothing on screen for about twenty minutes when I unplugged it.

I guess my questions are.. is it normal for it to take so long to display? I haven’t even seen it do the Apple logo loading screen!!

how do I reinstall sierra? Will a usb made via my MacBook work?

How can I boot to usb if I can’t see the display at all when I hold alt for boot options?!

Any information would be great! I’m not at work right now so I’m going to make a Sierra usb anyway ready for tomorrow. Hopefully I can find a better gpu in the warehouse for testing

I would try to do a fresh reinstall of the stock OS using a reboot and hold down the Command/Windows and R keys, so that your system can download and reinstall a fresh OS. Maybe format the drive first?
