Hello

I'm looking for a 128GB upgrade for the 2013 Mac Pro 6,1

The OWC kit seems to be 10600R (1333mhz) - is that all it can manage ?

Looking at 32GB 14900R (1866mhz) modules, sellers state they are only for dual CPU workstations ?

Please advise

Thanks

If you look at the pictures of the 32GB modules that OWC sells, you’ll see they have a lot of chips on them. The 6,1 can handle up to 8GB per rank. It can do two ranks per slot(or per channel, since it’s one slot per channel) at 1866 or four ranks at 1333.

It can use 32GB quad rank modules with 18-20 chips per side(varies by layout of module). Any 32GB modules with 8-12 chips per side will not work. Single-sided with 18-20 on one side and zero on the other also won’t work.

Going with higher speed-rated modules won’t allow for higher memory clock speeds, but may tighten up memory timings. You’ll likely see lower(better) memory latency. Unless what you’re doing is unimaginably memory-intensive, you won’t see a difference. It’s worth a try if you’re doing huge simulations that take 18+ hours to run. You might save 5-45 minutes.
