Here's the deal:

Mac Pro 3,1, got it with an Apple RAID card and four 300GB 15k drives. I want to boot off of an SSD, so I installed an Apricorn Velocity Solo 2 PCI card with an SSD mounted on it. I booted off a USB stick with the stock El Capitan installer I have used on other machines without incident and installed El Capitan to the SSD on the card.

After installation completes, the Mac Pro reboots and does nothing but sit in a gray screen. If I attempt to use the Option key on boot to choose the boot volume, I get nothing - more gray screen. I was able to get it to boot into Target Disk Mode and see the RAID volumes.

If I boot off the USB and go into Disk Utility, I can see the disk on the Apricorn Velocity card. Instead of being a bootable volume, it's just a regular volume (blue contents) and shows that a portion of it contains data.

I've tried it in PCI slots 2 and 3 and get the same result (this should matter.) Since this is a 3,1, it should be able to boot from the PCI slots.

Googling hasn't turned anything up so far, so I'm turning to the collective wisdom of the forum. Thanks in advance for any assistance with this. I don't want to give up my RAID if possible.
