I have two Mac Pro 3,1 towers and both are identical, but one likes to just turn the monitor blank and ramp the fans up to 100% within a minute or two of booting. I have looked, and there are no Kernel Panic logs, so no help there. I also ran the "quick" and the "extended" AHT and both passed.

I have used the known good machine to start swapping out parts, and the freeze persists even after:

  • swapping RAM
  • swapping GPUs
  • moving GPU to different x16 slot
  • swapping HDD/SSD
  • swapping RAM daughter cards
  • SMC and PRAM resets
  • completely dusted/blew out the entire case.

What else can I do to try and narrow this down? The only thing I can think of is to see if the problem persists with one of the two CPUs removed. Then swap them just in case I left the bad one in the first time. Is there anything in particular I need to be aware of when removing a single CPU for testing? Will I need to re-do the RAM configuration or anything like that?

Or, possibly I could swap the power supply if you think that could be it?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

Both systems are 3,1, dual CPU, 18GB RAM, HD 5770, El Cap.

Well, in case anyone in the future stumbles across this, I removed the upper CPU and covered the empty socket with tape to keep dust out, then replaced the heatsink. That seemed to solve the issue.
