Hi All,

I purchased a Mac Pro 3.1 (Quad 2.8Ghz) machine recently it's been running fine however i've been keen to give it a boost by installing another processor in the remaining socket.

Have purchased another intel E5462 processor from ebay which is brand new however when i have dropped it into the CPU A slot and put the heat sink in place with the right HS grease it fails to boot. The only difference between these two processors from what i can see is the numbers on the 5th line and at the base of the board. Essentially the models are the same?

I've now taken the original Processor out and tried in the CPU A slot and it fires up fine... Also vice versa with CPU B but no results from the new processor.

I have a PC i7 based computer which i built myself so i'm not worried about tinkering around with the MP however i spent a few hours already reading through forums and it seems as though most people haven't really done much in the way of upgrading these model with success??

I have tried the reset button and left the power off in an effort to reset the SMC. i'm not sure what to do next - could be a dud process?? The only good news is that it still runs happily on the original processor..
Any ideas out there??

much appreciated!

UPDATE!!

I have just purchased another processor which has come from a 2.8Ghz Mac Pro and dropped it into the socket - working fine.
Still confused as to the difference between the 2 processors?
As imagined a fairly simple process to upgrade.
