Tomorrow I need to order a mac Pro

I have basicly three choices

Mac Pro 3.0 with 2gb Ram

Mac Pro 2.6 with 4 gb ram

Mac Pro 2.6 with 2gb Ram and 23" Apple LCD

They all run at around the same price
regardless of the config it will have a 160gb HDD, ATI X1900
I do heavy Illustrator, Indesign and photoshop

I cant wait for the quad cores
I dont think the system will get upgraded after it is initially purchased

Since you already have a 24" monitor, I voted for the 2.6 with 4 gigs of RAM. The 3.0 is overpriced for what you get, so I'd avoid that, personally. The 2.6 is really the sweet spot, like everyone has said in the past, and I think if you load it up with 4 gigs it'll really fly.

You're not going to notice that much difference in Adobe applications until the universal binary version is released.

The 2.66 is the sweetspot and I haven't heard many complaints other than fussing about the cost of FB ECC RAM.

If you're doing this for a living go with what improves your workflow the most for least amount of money.

If working with 2 displays will increase you productivity even more, then the 23" ACD is certainly worth the investment.

So I voted 2.66GHz 2GB RAM (to get you rolling ) and the 23" display.

If your current display will suffice for a while, then go for the extra MATCHED 4 GB
FB ECC RAM then get the display ;)

The ideal system would have 4 GB MATCHED DIMMS, but if you need a display the Apple 23" is your best bet for photo work.

You're better off just getting the machine with enough RAM to run Photoshop,
so 2 GB will do for starters.

Then you can determine how much more RAM you need after Adobe soaks you for the UB upgrade to CS3 later this spring.
