Having had my mac pro for a week now I've started to have the chance to use it for all my different rediculous tasks. from guitar jam to photo retouch to ad design.
I know adobe stuff has been discussed here. I've read some of it. I just wanted to throw out my random first thoughts and see what you all had to say.
the last computer I had was a dual core amd which I bought exactly 2 years ago. verybuggy but it had some power.
onto the mac:
mac pro 8 x 2.8
6 gb ram
OSX 400 GB
scratch 250 GB
projects 750 x 2 ( software raid)
time machine 500 GB
yesterday I worked on a 150 mb photoshop ad. 300dpi 8x10. it was pretty easy to work on. I did some smudging work and it still had a pretty huge delay between each stroke. I was suprised about this as I kind of expected it to be almost real time. encoding was faster but not rediculously faster then my last computer. definately everything is more snappy and although the loading time isnt mind blowing, the processors dont usually feel to bogged down. although sometimes it does feel like that and when I look at the CPU usage its obvious that bad software coding is causing one processor to be bogged down instead of evenly sharing stuff.
I've also been comparing this to my imac at work (newest generation 2.4 - 4 gb ram) and to be honest. the difference between the 2 really doesnt feel that insane. I really think its because hardware is getting to far ahead of software. nothing is 64 bit and very few programs are multicore. and even then, its basic multicore support.
Ive heard OSX is pretty good with multicore. will it send programs you open to differnt processors? like processor 1+2 = photoshop. 3 = indesign, 4 = whatever else? Becaue if so thats a start anyways.
I long for the day I can be editing one photos and see all 8 cores taking the work load evenly. because then this mac will be able to do all the things that I know it could do if the software wasnt years behind the hardware.
Ive also found my mac to be very buggy. lots of wierd software crashes. However this might be that the install of leopard went wrong. Im going to try a reinstall of that. although even my mac at work has its fair share of program crashes. OSX definately isnt perfect. better then vista though. and the UI is awesomely logical.
thoughts? comments?
P.S. I have noticed in logic pro I can get awesome latency and do a hell of a lot more then my last PC.
P.P.S. Id also like to add that the work computer by chance came in the same week as my mac pro so I made the huge jump where I completely left microsoft behind both at work and at home. So I feel that my perspective is somewhat unique.
