Mac Pro locks me out with spinning beach ball of death

I've got this problem recently that is not only terribly frustrating, but also putting my HDs at risk because I have to power off the Mac by holding the power button. Sometimes when I come back to my Mac Pro, it's locked and has the window up that says "To access this computer, you need to enter your password." Except it's got the spinning beach ball of death, and I can't type. I can't even SSH into the box from my laptop to see what process is causing this madness!

Any ideas?
