Am I getting hosed?

I have a first gen Mac Pro - late 2006 I think - and one of the processors died, making it one hell of a paper weight. The authorized Mac tech has told me he has to order the entire logic board with processors b/c you can't just replace the processors. Googling tells me otherwise.

Basically it's $700 for the parts - is this the route I have to go? Is that a good price? Can I upgrade processors at this point?

Moral of the story, get Apple Care no matter what it costs!

If it really is just the processor and assuming you have a 2.66GHz model you can buy a new one on eBay for under $300 and fit it yourself.

Search for Xeon 5150.

Do you know why it died? Make sure you install the heat sink properly on your new processor and keep an eye on the CPU temperatures at the beginning... Perhaps it overheated, although Xeon processors should be very robust and built for reliability...

Hey thanks for the replies!

I've since talked to him and he's investigating to see if it is just the processor that is the issue.

If it is, we'll be either replacing it with the same, or upgrading both to Clovertown or something - depending on price. Thanks again!

I may be wrong but last week I read a thread here about a guy who had processor replaced by Apple for free even though he didn't have Apple care nor warranty. Somebody else posted that Mac Pros have some kind of defect and processors die or something like that... Right now I'm on my mobile phone so can't really look for that ;)
I hope somebody will correct my post...
