Mac Pro Question For A Newbie

Hi there im asking on behalf of a freind who is without a computer system and is looking to purchase a mac pro but is wondering if a new one is due out any time soon and also if if he purchases it but only gets One 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor would he in the future be able to add a second one or is the motherboard different between the two models. one with a single processor and the one with two ?

all help and advice would be great as my mac knowledge is not that great.
