mac pro radeon 6870 doesn't enable second screen

I have a mac pro 4.1 OS 6.8 (was on the HD of an mac 1.1) whilst testing only one screen came on even though both were connected to the DVI outlets.
Could it be that I need to upgrade to a diff version before the second screen will be enabled?
