MP 1,1-5,1 Mac Pro screen flashing/pulsing (not flicker)...why?

For several days the screen on my Mac Pro 5.1 running High Sierra has been flashing intermittently. The dock icons flash up on the full screen. Doesn't seem to be the mouse, tried two of them. No idea what to try next...

Help!
