Mac Pro won't shut off after Leopard upgrade

Anyone else have this? My MacPro since upgrading to Leopard intermittently will not shut off. The screen goes black but the light on the machine never turns off, and when it is forced to turn off and go back on it says it was shut down unexpectedly.

Short of reinstalling Leopard (and what should I do - an archive and reinstall?)

I have a similar problem, but not exactly the same. When I attempt to shut down my Mac pro every night, it starts the process but gets hung up. The desk top icons disappear, but then it hangs at the desk top with a spinning gear icon. I also notice that when I click "Shut down" I hear the hard drives spinning up. I am able to hold down the button on the front of the machine and shut it down that way. I initially thought this had something to do with the external hard drive I added for Time Machine, but I'm far from convinced of that anymore.
