When I take a screenshot, is there a way the selection can be copied to clipboard? Since a few Mac OS's ago, a screenshot selection brings up a window with some options, but I have not been able to find a way to simply copy the item to clipboard. I've been saving it, opening, and then copying it. Thanks for any advice

I use Cmd Shift 5. Then you can choose whatever target or destination you want, without having to remember any special combination of keys (other than Cmd Shift 5)

Saving to the Clipboard isn't an automated option with Cmd+Shift+5... you have to take the extra step of selecting it from the drop-down menu. An automated option would be nice, but as it stands you need a 3rd party app like MonoSnap (free) to do that.

There is no need for any third party utilities. Personally, I avoid them when the system already provides the feature I want. See Taz Mangus' post #2 for Apple's instructions on how to take a screenshot (and copy it to the clipboard). It's very easy.

Cmd-shift-5 can copy to the clipboard exactly like cmd-shift 3 and 4. Just include the control key when you snap.

I stand corrected. But trying to remember to add the option key after 3 decades of just hitting CMD+Shift+3/4 will be tough for me. ;)
