My Dad's SE has stopped booting properly, and he's lost without it (it was his gaming computer)

After the 'beeeeep' when you turn power on, there always used to be a noise from inside the case (hard disk) which doesn't happen anymore. A little encouragement to the case would get it going when the problem started happening, but that's not working anymore.

Is the hard disk finally dead? If it is, what would be the best way of resurrecting the machine?

A Macintosh SE as a gaming computer?

Well, in any case... does it come on at all? As in coming to a gray screen with a question mark? If so, I would certainly bet on a bad hard drive, especially if the computer needed some love taps to get the drive going. You have to remember, the hard drives in these are over 20 years old, and a failure is inevitably going to happen.
