Mac selecting issue

Hello.. I've got the late 2009 iMac and recently I have noticed a change (a rather annoying on too)...


On all of my applications what used the selection field (not sure of its real name) like in the picture below

seem to have broken and all now look something like this

Now i'm not sure what has happened, at first I thought it was just xcode, then I noticed it on more programs :S


If anyone would know why it has done this (or what the selection tool is called so i can google it more) I would be very greatful
