Mac speech recognition

Hi I've got Mavericks 10.9.2 and I've downloaded 'advanced dictation' in system preferences. However, it often takes about ten seconds to start after double tapping the 'fn' key. Afterwards it then starts instantly. Maybe this is normal or maybe its not, does anyone know?
