In the past, apple has had a sale in the spring where you get a free iPod or something if you buy a Mac. Did they do that in 2011? Any indication if they'll do it in 2012?

Apple occasionally has sales that include a free iPod with a purchase of a new Mac.

What you're referring to is the Back to School promotion. When they do it depends on where you live. In the US, it is done in the summer.

They used to give free iPods, but last year they gave a $100 iTunes/Mac App Store gift card instead.

I would safely bet that they will do the same this year.
