My macbook pro (2009 model) out of the blue started giving kernel panics. I had noticed it had been a little slow for a few days. Then every time I restarted it gave me a kernel panic after a few mins and I was forced to restart. I had noticed the mac trying to index a few times and also one or two times I had a corrupted screen where it all went crazy.

Tried different steps I found on here and that led me to test hard drive. Did a test and errors came up. so restarted and did drive repair. That failed and then it tried to boot into safe mode each time (unsuccessfully)

So I went out and bought a new hdd to rule that out. I have just installed it and tried to restore from time machine by holding option key. It then picks up 'macbookpro backup' from external hdd but then when I click on it I just get a folder with a ? (question mark).

Anyone else had something similar? Do you think it is hard drive or something more serious (i.e. motherboard or something?!)

thanks anyone for your ideas.
