I just received my studio Ultra with 128gb ram, I have several external drive enclosures including a raid from OWC that uses "soft raid",
I also have a g drive shuttle raid. Whenever the computer is idle for a while it randomly shuts down. I have isolated the problem to the drives as when they are not connected I do not have a problem. I have tried connecting the G-drive raid shuttle by itself and crashes occur. I connect the OWC raid by itself crashes occur. No external drives no crashes. These drives had been working flawlessly on my iMac Pro intel for years no crashes? Anyone out there have OWC or G shuttle drive raids working on a Mac Studio 2 without crashes?

Are these immediate or sudden crashes? Do they occur coincidentally with any other action or occurrence (like during sleep)? Are the drives connected directly…or through some sort of hub?

I just bought an M2 Max Mac Studio which is setup (typing on it now). I just got the OWC Thuderbay 8 in today and I can let you know once I set it up (likely by this weekend).

I am a little concerned. My DROBO 5D, when connected via Thunderbolt has this exact issue (both with my Mac Studio and my Mac mini which I recently traded in). I assumed it was a DROBO specific issue, because the company stopped updating software right after the M series chips debuted and the company is done. My DROBO never had any issues on my Intel iMac. It only started about 6 months into the M1 Mac mini ownership. When the DROBO is connected via USB, it doesn't cause the Mac to crash, however it will unmount randomly (thus requiring the DROBO to have to be shutdown and restarted to remount).

I was hoping to fix this with the purchase of the OWC Thunderbay.

If the OWC drive causes my Mac Studio to restart randomly the same way as the DROBO I will not be happy. This setup was not cheap to say the least.

I have some ancient OWC TB enclosures that did not work well with the Studio. After transferring the drives to newer enclosures I have not had an issue, as long as they are not daisy chained more than one deep (two enclosures on a TB port) or connected through a CalDigit elements hub. They seem to like better quality cables. A couple drives are RAIDed with Disk Utility. Most drives are JBOD. I have a couple LaCie 2 big enclosures, one of which can disappear now and then. That one is has two partitions, if that makes a difference.
