Mac suddenly stopped recognizing external HD as a device, but not in Utilities!

Please help, new to the forums...

I have a Samsung Story Station 1.5TB that has been formatted in FAT32 because I use it on PS3. Suddenly my Mac 10.5.8, for some reason, did not recognize it on the desktop. Now I can only see it in Disk Utility, which means I can't use it. Do not want to try to re-format it because I have valuable work on the drive. Besides, if I do, what's to say it won't happen again?

Could someone tell me not only what to do but also what happened?

Please help, thank you.
