When I try to back up my movies that are on DVD (because I am moving overseas for two years) the movies only play almost to the end but then stop. I'm using Mac The Ripper and am using title only extraction which I thought was the way to do it. I know that you can rip the whole thing and then use Mac DVD player to watch the movie but I want to be able to view the movies on a TV using my external hard drive. How do I fix this?

I suggest using Hanbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) for this type of application, that way you can control file size output, as well as many other aspects of it.

If you're going overseas, the quality of the movie won't matter as much as the quantity of movies you have, according to my buddy in the 182nd.

I do have handbrake but I find it difficult to know which settings to use without the picture being tiny etc I use it to put stuff on my ipod but not sure about wanting to watch it on a tv.

I would suggest the Apple TV, SeaGate Freeagent media system, or a similar HDD media output capable device. Check out this article about Handbrake's capabilities and an overall good instructional : http://digg.com/d37gbl
